How to specify an O-ring size
Specify the inside diameter (ID) × cross-section (CS), with units and tolerances. The outside diameter is ID + 2 × CS. Include the groove drawing: the dimensions of the loose O-ring alone do not establish the correct fit in an assembly.
Dimension example only: 20 × 2 mm means a 20 mm inside diameter, 2 mm cross-section and 24 mm outside diameter. This is not a stock listing or an approved application specification.
Custom O-ring buying questions
Can you work from a used O-ring?
Send photographs, measurements and the equipment or groove drawing if available. A used ring may be stretched, flattened or swollen; its measured dimensions should not be treated as the original nominal size. Material cannot be identified reliably from colour alone.
What does an AS568 or ISO 3601 size tell you?
It provides a dimensional reference when the applicable size, tolerance class and edition are specified. It does not by itself confirm material compatibility, pressure capability or product certification. Include the reference and acceptance requirements in the enquiry.
What determines the minimum order and delivery time?
The drawing, selected compound, quantity, tooling and sample-approval needs determine the quotation. Send the first-batch and repeat-order quantities. We confirm minimum order, tooling costs and production timing per project; freight time is separate.
Compare materials and standards
NBR
Nitrile rubberMineral oils, many fuels, good wear and broad industrial availability.
Usually not the first choice for ozone, weathering, ketones or strong oxidising media.
FKM / FPM
Fluorocarbon rubberHeat, oils, fuels and many chemical environments.
Hot water, steam, ketones and low-temperature duty require grade-specific review.
VMQ / PVMQ
Silicone rubberWide temperature flexibility, ozone and weather resistance; colour options.
Abrasion, tear strength and gas permeability can limit dynamic or high-pressure use.
EPDM
Ethylene propylene rubberWater, steam, ozone, weathering and many polar fluids.
Generally unsuitable for petroleum oils, hydrocarbon fuels and many non-polar solvents.
